EUWC Memorial Graduate Research Fellowship
2025-26 Recipient: Olivia Cocking

Olivia Cocking is a sixth-year PhD candidate in the Department of History. Her dissertation, France After Empire: Migration, Citizenship, and Social Rights, 1946 – Present, examines how decolonization transformed the French welfare state. It does so by focussing on the experiences of migrants from the former empire with three domains of welfare: social security and labour rights, child protection, and retirement programs. Through oral histories and an analysis of the archives of social security tribunals, aid associations, and policymakers at local and national levels, her dissertation shows how (post) colonial migrations shifted understandings of the scope, purpose, and subjects of welfare in the second half of the twentieth century. She has presented her research at conferences in Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States and her dissertation has been supported by grants and fellowships from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the American Historical Association, the Society for French Historical Studies, the Chateaubriand Fellowship of the French Embassy in the United States, and the European Union Studies Association, as well as Emory University’s Laney Graduate School, Department of History and Halle Institute for Global Research. Prior to beginning her PhD, she received an Dual BA from the University of British Columbia and Sciences Po Paris (2019) and an MSt in History from the University of Oxford (2020).
