Memorial Library Fund
Each year the Emory University Woman's Club makes a $50 donation to the Woodruff Library from our Memorial Library Fund to honor each of our friends who has passed away.
The Memorial Library Fund has an interesting history. In 1940, the Emory University Woman's Club initiated a memorial in memory of Sterling Brinkley, Jr., the son of Mrs. Sterling G. Brinkley, president of the EUWC, 1938-1940. A Memorial Fund Committee was given the responsibility for determining an appropriate memorial. In l 941, the committee recommended that the Memorial Fund be devoted to buying books for the li brary. The memorials honor members of the EUWC and their immediate families who have passed away. A Book of Remembrance contains the names of those memorialized.
A decision was made to enter the names of all those eligible for the memorial from the time Emory University was established in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1914. For that reason, names in the Book of Remembrance date back to 1919. The first name is that of Ruth Shelton, daughter of Dr. William Arthur Shelton, Profes sor of Hebrew and Old Testament.
The Jane and William Carney Endowment
In December of 2015, Jane and Bill Camey graciously funded a $100,000 endowment in support of the EUWC. This endowment is being used for our growing operating costs, allowing us to use other donations for community projects. There are always routine expenses for an organization like ours such as for printing, mail ing, gifting speakers, recruiting new members, and paying for the occasional membership celebration. For many decades these ex penses had been met by dues and donations from the members themselves. There were never any complaints, but, after all, our wish was to donate to Emory and the surrounding community. In 1982 Jane Camey joined the club and became aware that there was not much of an operating budget. After a fortuitous EUWC Anniversary Dinner attended by Jane and her husband, the two decided to gift the organization with a generous endowment to be used for keeping basic operations going. Today the Carneys' generosity secures the financial future of this club and ensures that there will be meetings of this group 100 years from now. We will always be grateful for their thoughtfulness.
